Alcohol Sub-Committee Objectives

Purpose

Concerned residents have identified the negative effects of alcohol as the most serious problem facing PB. The abuse of alcohol affects the health, safety, economy and quality of life in our community.  We want to live in a community where residents and visitors alike will be part of our community for the right reasons; to enjoy its safe and beautiful beaches, parks and neighborhoods, and the variety of responsible businesses and restaurants.  We want to make it rewarding to be good neighbors and difficult to be bad neighbors, whether they are residents, visitors or businesses.  We want to make it clear to individuals that indulge in unhealthy or harmful choices or businesses that profit from irresponsible business practices that they are not welcome in PB.

Goals

The goal of our Alcohol Subcommittee is to partner with law enforcement, political leaders, community residents, the prevention community and merchants to create policies and standards that will mitigate the negative effects of alcohol for the benefit of all who work, live, and visit Pacific Beach.

Methods and Process

·        Create higher standards for new alcohol licenses, restrict questionable modifications to existing licenses and promote a city CUP (conditional use permit) requirement for approval.

·        Promote the prevention of alcohol licensees from engaging in irresponsible business practices.

·        Encourage all involved to make better, long-term and more strategic alcohol licensing decisions that are in the interest of public health and safety and that will benefit the community at large.

*Note: The CUP review process will provide a way for residents to have a voice in the decision-making that shapes the retail alcohol environment in Pacific Beach.
